Jammed roller blind: what to do and avoid

If your roller blind has jammed, stop pulling. Lower it a little, then raise it slowly, and look for a slat out of its track or something blocking it. If it is electric, check the breaker and the remote batteries. If it stays stuck, do not force it or open the box: the repair is usually quick when nothing has been broken by force.

Why a roller blind jams

Most windows in Portugal have an estore: an outdoor roller blind whose slats run in tracks outside the glass and roll up into a box above the window. On manual blinds you pull a strap, the fita, which winds into a small winder set in the wall. On electric ones a motor inside the roller does the work. A jam nearly always starts at one of these points.

A worn or snapped strap

Straps fray with use and with sun until they snap. Often the blind jams first, because the strap slips or winds crooked in the winder.

Slats out of the track, or something in the way

Strong wind or a knock can push a slat out of its side track or bend it, and the blind comes down at an angle. Leaves, dust or a plant pot resting against a track can stop it halfway too.

Motor or remote, on electric blinds

If an electric blind does nothing at all, there may be no power, the remote batteries may be flat or the motor may have failed. If it hums but does not move, or always stops at the same point, the problem is mechanical or in the motor settings.

What you can safely do

You can try these without tools and without risk.

  • Stop pulling the strap. Lower the blind a little, guiding it by hand, then raise it slowly.
  • Look through the glass for a slat out of its track, a bent slat or something blocking it.
  • Remove anything in plain view and within easy reach, with the window open and without leaning out.
  • If it is electric, check the blinds breaker in the fuse box and change the remote batteries.
  • Press the button once and wait. Pressing up and down over and over does the motor no good.

What to avoid so it does not get worse

Much of the serious damage to blinds starts with forcing them.

  • Do not lean out of the window to push the blind from outside, and do not use brooms or stepladders on the balcony to reach it. A fall is far worse than a stuck blind.
  • Do not yank the strap or hang your weight on it. That is how straps snap and slats bend.
  • Do not open the box or the strap winder. The winder spring is under tension and, if the strap comes loose, the blind drops all at once.
  • Do not put cooking oil or grease in the tracks. They hold dust and the blind soon sticks even more.
  • On electric blinds, do not touch the box or the motor with the power on.

Repair or replace the blind

In most cases a blind can be repaired: the strap, spring or winder is changed, broken slats are replaced, or the motor is repaired, or swapped for an equivalent when beyond repair. A new made to measure blind only makes sense when the old one is badly damaged.

Cleaning the tracks with a cloth and checking the strap once a year is part of basic home maintenance and helps stop a blind jamming in the first place.

When to call a technician and how the repair goes

Call when the blind is still stuck after these checks, when the strap has snapped, when slats are broken or when an electric blind does not respond with power on and fresh batteries. Since estores sit outside the glass, these are outdoor blind repairs, done through the box. Our blind repair in Porto covers PVC, aluminium and wooden blinds, manual and electric, across Greater Porto and at any hour. If an electric blind has lost power and the breaker will not reset, the fault may be in the wiring, and that is a job for an electrician in Porto.

You call or send a message

A person answers. Tell us whether the blind is manual or electric, where it stopped and what happened before. A photo of the window and the box on WhatsApp, to +351 928 286 711, helps us bring the right parts.

We agree the visit

On the phone we give you a realistic arrival time and agree how you would like to pay.

We open the box and find the cause

The box opens from the front or from underneath, without breaking the wall. Only when it was sealed during building work does it need opening, and we make it good afterwards.

You get the quote before we start

We tell you what needs replacing and what it costs. If you rent, the quote is written so you can forward it to your landlord. Nothing goes ahead without your approval.

Most repairs finished on the same visit

We carry straps, springs and slats with us, so most repairs are finished on the same visit. Before leaving, we run the blind all the way up and down. If a motor or another part has to be ordered, we tell you how long it will take.

You keep the invoice

The invoice lists the work and the parts separately. That document is your guarantee and what entitles you to complain if anything fails.

Jammed blind questions

How long does it take to replace a snapped strap?

Thirty to sixty minutes per blind, including opening and closing the box.

Do you repair electric blinds of any brand?

Yes, including tubular motors and radio remotes. When a motor is beyond repair we fit an equivalent one.

How much does a blind repair cost?

It depends on what has failed, so we do not give prices over the phone. The quote is free and given on site, before any work.

Tell us what is happening

We take the call, work out the fault and tell you how long we need to get there. The quote costs nothing.
