In Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira the salt air does slow, steady work. Blind fittings, lock cylinders and aluminium frames near the seafront age faster than they do a few kilometres inland. The shared soil stack in the densest blocks

When a building stack blocks, the people at the bottom notice first. Water from a fourth floor shower comes up through a ground floor shower drain. It is not a fault in your flat: the stack is shared, and the condomínio, the owners' association, deals with it through its administrator. If you rent, tell your landlord too.

Before clearing anything, we confirm where the plug is, so the bill goes to the right person.
