Outdoor roller blinds: what usually goes wrong
In Portugal an estore is not an indoor fabric blind. It is an outdoor roller shutter: slats that run in tracks outside the glass and roll up into a box above the window. People here call it a blind, so we do too, but picture a shutter.
It goes up with a strap, a crank or a switch. These are the outdoor blind repairs we get called for most.
Jammed roller blind
The blind stops halfway, or comes down crooked and sticks on one side. Usually a slat is out of its track, a broken slat is holding the others, or the roller has stopped winding straight. Do not pull hard or push the slats from outside: that turns a small fault into bent slats and a snapped strap. Our guide covers what to do with a jammed roller blind.
Snapped blind strap
Straps wear with use and sun, and one day they go. If it breaks near the winder, the small box in the wall where it rolls up, the blind drops. If it breaks inside the box, the blind stays up. We replace the strap and, if the spring is tired, the winder too.
The blind creeps down or drops
If it slides down when you let go of the strap, the winder spring can no longer hold it. If it came down with a bang, the strap has snapped or come off the roller. Do not lift it by hand: the bottom slats may be out of the track.
The blind has rolled up into the box
Stops on the bottom slat keep the blind from going higher than the window. When one breaks, the blind disappears into the box and takes the strap with it. We open the box, unroll the blind by hand and fit new stops.
Broken or warped slats
A slat cracked by wind or a knock, or PVC slats warped by the heat, stop the blind rolling and damage their neighbours. When the rest is sound, we replace only the bad slats, with matching ones.
Electric blind motor repair
On an electric blind the motor hides inside the roller. The fault can be there, in the remote or in the power supply. We check everything, simplest first.
No response to the remote or the switch
Check the remote batteries and the fuse board for a tripped breaker. After many runs in a row, wait a while: many motors cut out when hot. If power reaches the blind and the motor does nothing, the fault is in the motor or its connection. If it is the wiring in the flat, that is a job for an electrician in Porto, and we handle it in the same visit.
It hums but does not move
The effort is not reaching the slats: a broken part between motor and roller, a caught slat or the motor giving out. Stop pressing the button: the motor heats up.
It stops short or goes too far
The blind stops before it closes, or rolls up too far and strains the box. The motor stop points have drifted, and often they just need setting again.
Remotes and automation
A lost remote, a new one that will not pair, or blinds that no longer move together. We set them up and leave them working.
Strap, crank or motor: what usually fails first
How the blind is raised changes the kind of fault.
Strap blinds
Very common in flats across Greater Porto. The strap goes first, worn by use and sun, then the winder spring, which lets the blind creep down. Straps and springs travel in the van, so this is usually finished in one visit.
Crank blinds
The handle turns a small gear linked to the roller, mostly on large openings such as balcony doors. The crank joint or the gear gives way, and the handle spins freely or catches partway round. If the part is not in the van, we tell you how long it will take.
Electric blinds
No strap to wear out. The first problems are usually the stop points and the remotes. When a motor is beyond repair we fit an equivalent, whatever the make of the original.
PVC, aluminium and wooden blinds
The slat material changes how a blind ages.
PVC
Light and, with aluminium, the most common in newer buildings. The enemy is the sun: on south and west facing façades the slats warp and turn brittle, and a warped slat ends up jamming the blind.
Aluminium
It handles the sun better than PVC and does not warp the same way. But a knock or a gust leaves a slat dented, and a dented slat scrapes the track every time.
Wood
Still found in older homes, especially in the historic centre of Porto. It swells with damp and rots in unpainted bottom slats. It can be repaired, but new slats usually have to be ordered to measure.
The blind box: inside, outside or built into the wall
The box above the window holds the roller the slats wind onto, the pulley for the strap and, on electric blinds, the motor. Tracks run down each side, the stops sit on the bottom slat and the strap winder is set into the wall. Where the box sits changes how we work.
Box inside the room
The most common case: the cover opens at the front or underneath and the technician works from there, with no building work.
Box outside, on the façade
Often found where the blind was added after the building went up. It opens from outside, working from the window. Tell us on the phone if this is yours.
Box built into the wall in older buildings
In many older buildings the box was built into the wall, with a wooden cover inside. A renovation may have plastered or papered over it, and nobody remembers where it opens. The cover is opened in the right place and made good afterwards.
Blinds near the sea: salt, sand and wind
In Foz, Matosinhos, Leça da Palmeira, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde and Espinho, salt air attacks the fittings and springs, and sand builds up in the tracks. The blind gets heavy, rattles and one day it jams.
In strong wind, a blind left halfway with the gaps open bangs against the tracks until a slat jumps out or cracks. In a storm it holds up better fully down or fully up.
Holiday flats shut for months often greet you with a stuck blind. Raise and lower it slowly before pulling hard, and if it will not run, call before the strap snaps.
Before you call: what to check and what not to force
You do not need to know the name of the part. Tell us whether the blind has a strap, a crank or a switch, where it stopped and where the box is. A photo on WhatsApp helps us bring the right parts. Do not yank the strap or open the winder: the spring is under tension and lets go all at once.
When it really is urgent
Most blind faults can wait until morning. A blind stuck open at night on a ground floor cannot, nor can one that has dropped and hangs out of its track on a windy day. That is why we answer 24 hours a day.
New blind fitting
Most blinds can be repaired. A slat, a strap or a motor is no reason to replace the whole blind.
When repair stops making sense
PVC slats that crack at a touch, several slats already replaced and more going the same way, wood rotten from top to bottom. Then repairing again only pays for the next breakdown, and we tell you so plainly. When a blind can still be repaired, we say that too, even if a new one would be a bigger job for us.
How a new blind is fitted
New blinds are made to measure. We measure on site, talk through the material and manual or electric, and quote before anything is ordered. We tell you how long it will take to arrive rather than inventing a date, and only leave once it runs properly.
Blinds in a rented flat or a shared building
This is general guidance, not legal advice. Your contract and the rules of your building come first.
If you rent
As a general rule, a blind that fails through normal use is a matter for the landlord, and damage caused by whoever lives there is down to them, but contracts differ. Tell your landlord straight away, in writing and with a photo. Nothing goes ahead without your approval, so you can get the quote, show it to your landlord and decide later.
In a building with a condomínio
The condomínio is the association of owners that runs a block of flats, and the blinds are part of its façade. A repair with matching slats changes nothing, but a new blind in another colour or material can, and some buildings require the same type on every window. Ask the administrator first.
Blind servicing
Many straps give warning before they snap: frayed edges, a blind that gets heavy to raise, a slat scraping in the track. During a service we clean and lubricate the tracks, check the strap and winder and, on electric blinds, reset the stop points. It makes sense before winter. It is the kind of home maintenance that saves you a dark bedroom on a stormy night.
Between visits, wipe the tracks with a damp cloth, especially near the sea, and never use oil or grease: they hold dust. For the rest of the home, see our guide to seasonal home repairs.

How the repair goes, from the first call to the invoice
It is always the same path, whether it is a snapped strap or a motor that has stopped responding.
You call or send a message
A person answers. We ask for your address, with floor and door, what is happening and whether the blind has a strap, a crank or a switch. With a photo, we tell you what is likely and how long we will take to get there.
We agree the visit
We confirm the arrival time and how you would like to pay while still on the phone, so there are no surprises at the door. Until we arrive, please do not force the blind.
We open the box and find the cause
The technician opens the box from the front or underneath and checks the strap, roller, slats and, on electric blinds, the motor and remote. They explain what they find in plain words and show you the faulty part.
You get the quote before we start
We tell you what needs doing, what it costs and how long it takes. If the repair is not worth it, we say so. Nothing goes ahead without your approval.
We repair it, usually in the same visit
We carry straps, springs and slats, so most repairs are finished in the same visit. If a motor or special slats have to be ordered, we tell you how long they will take and arrange a second visit.
We test it in front of you and close the box
We run the blind up and down several times to confirm it rolls straight. Only then do we close the box and, if it was opened in the wall, make it good.
You keep the invoice and our number
The invoice lists the work and the parts separately. That document is your guarantee and what entitles you to complain if anything fails. If the blind gives trouble again, you call the same number.
Blind repair questions
Is an estore the same as a blind?
Not quite. An estore is an outdoor roller shutter that rolls up into a box above the window. English speakers here often call it a blind, hence the word, but it is not a fabric blind indoors.
Do you have to break the wall to open the box?
No. The box opens from the front or from underneath. Only when it was sealed during building work does it need opening, and we make it good afterwards.
Will it be fixed in the same visit?
Usually, yes. A strap replacement takes thirty to sixty minutes per blind, including opening and closing the box. Motors, special slats and new blinds may have to be ordered.
Do you repair electric blinds of any brand?
Yes, including tubular motors and radio remotes. When a motor is beyond repair we fit an equivalent one.
Is an old blind worth repairing?
In most cases, yes. It stops being worth it when the slats crack at a touch, the wood is rotten or the blind has been patched so often it no longer rolls straight. The technician tells you on site.
I rent my flat. Can I call you myself?
Yes. It is wise to tell your landlord first, since that is who you settle the cost with. The quote is given before any work, so you can show it to your landlord and decide afterwards.
How much does a blind repair cost?
It depends on the fault, so we do not give prices over the phone without seeing the blind. The quote is free and given on site, before any work.
Do you come out at night or at weekends?
Yes, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. A ground floor blind that will not come down at night is exactly the kind of call we take.
Blind repair across Greater Porto
We repair blinds in every municipality of Greater Porto. The historic centre of Porto still has wooden blinds and boxes built into the wall. Newer blocks, like many in Maia and Gaia, mostly have PVC, aluminium and electric blinds with remotes. Along the coast, salt and wind mean the tracks and fittings need more care.
