Gaia is the most populated council in Greater Porto and the most varied. By the river, in Santa Marinha and Afurada, there is older building stock with pipework due for replacement. In Mafamude and Vilar do Paraíso there are residential towers with concealed wall cisterns. Along the coast, from Canidelo south to Valadares and Gulpilhares, there are more houses, and the calls are mostly about boilers and cylinders.

River, centre, coast and inland: four ways of living in Gaia

Gaia changes a lot from end to end, and where your home sits tells us almost as much as the fault itself. The council is divided into parishes, called freguesias.

By the river. Santa Marinha climbs the hill from the quayside and the Port wine lodges, with older houses and tight streets. Afurada, a fishing community on the south bank near the mouth of the Douro, has low houses, many with tiled fronts. Further east, Oliveira do Douro and Avintes also reach the river.

In the centre. Mafamude, around Avenida da República where the metro runs, is the area of tall blocks, where a single soil stack serves many flats.

On the coast. Canidelo sits between the Douro and the Atlantic, with Lavadores beach and newer developments close to the sea. Heading south come Madalena, Valadares, Gulpilhares and Arcozelo, home to Aguda.

Inland. Vilar de Andorinho, Pedroso, Grijó and Serzedo are less dense, with more houses with gardens and addresses away from the main roads.

Blocked drains: from a tower block stack to the chamber in the garden

In a tall building, if water backs up in more than one fixture or shows up in the flat below, the blockage is in the soil stack, which is a common part of the building. We find where it sits before we start, so the bill goes to the right person.

At houses, from the coast to inland, the waste runs through inspection chambers in the garden or garage, and that is where we work, often against grease or tree roots. Blinds that take salt, sand and wind head on

From Canidelo to Aguda, roller blinds work harder. Salt sticks to the tracks and fittings, wind blown sand makes the slats scrape and fronts facing the sea take the wind head on. Straps wear faster and electric motors suffer from the damp.

On the upper floors of Mafamude and Vilar do Paraíso the work is done from inside, through the box, which opens from the front or underneath without breaking the wall. Give the parish and the street. Some places are known by the name of a beach or a spot, such as Aguda or Miramar, and the parish settles any doubt. In a tall block, give the floor, whether access is through the garage and who will let us in. For a house inland, a nearby landmark saves driving in circles.
