Locked out with the keys inside: what to do first
Most people who call us to open a door are standing on the landing or in the street, often late, with a phone running low. So the call is short and practical.
Before you call, think about two things. Does anyone have a spare key, a flatmate, a neighbour or your landlord? If they are close by, that is the quickest way in. And is there anyone inside who needs help?
The door slammed with the keys inside
This is the most common case. The wind shuts the door, or you step out to the post box and it closes behind you. The lock is only on the latch, with no turns of the key, and there is nearly always a way in without damaging anything. Double-locked door
If the door was locked with turns of the key, because the keys were lost after you left or the key snapped, the lock is fully closed and opening it takes more work. In many cases it can still be done without damaging the door, but sometimes the cylinder has to be sacrificed. We tell you which it is before we start, never after.
Someone inside who needs help
If a child is alone inside, someone cannot get to the door, or a pan is left on the hob, do not wait for us. Call 112, the European emergency number, first. The emergency services come before any lock.
Opening without damage: when it is possible
Opening without damage is always what we try first. We arrive, read the type of door and lock and choose the least destructive method. On most front doors that does the job without leaving a mark.
What most often ruins the chance of a clean opening is an earlier attempt. A card, a screwdriver or a shoulder against the door can bend the lock or chew up the cylinder, and after that there is no clean method left. If you have not tried anything yet, please do not. If you have, tell us on the phone, because it changes what we expect to find.
Security doors
If your flat has an armoured front door, a porta blindada, it usually has a multipoint lock and a tougher cylinder. We open these too, but it takes longer and calls for more care. A photo of the lock sent on WhatsApp helps us know in advance what we are dealing with.
Proof of address: why we ask for it
Before opening any door we ask for proof that the home is yours. ID that shows the address, a tenancy agreement or an equivalent document will do. We do not open without it, day or night.
If you have just moved to Porto and your ID does not show your address here, the tenancy agreement or an equivalent document serves as proof.
It can feel like distrust when you are standing outside your own front door, but the same rule stops a stranger from asking us to open your door while you are away. It protects every resident, you included.
If your documents are inside, say so straight away on the phone. The check is not waived, so that call is where we work out with you what can serve as proof, before we set off.
Lock change after opening
When the door opens without damage, the lock keeps working and there is nothing to change. There are three cases where a change makes sense: when the lock had to be sacrificed to open the door, when it was already worn and caused the problem, and when your keys were not left inside but lost.
In the first two cases we change it in the same visit, because we bring a replacement with us and the door is not left open waiting for a part. It is the same work our locksmith in Porto service does.
In the third case the question is different: who might have your keys? If they were lost along with anything that shows your address, changing the cylinder is the safe answer. We explain the options in our article on lost keys.
If you rent, tell your landlord when the lock is changed and arrange to give them a copy of the new key.

You call or send a message
A person answers. We ask for the full address with floor and door, whether the door slammed or is locked, whether it is an armoured door and whether anyone has tried to open it. If you can, send a photo of the lock on WhatsApp. We then give you a realistic time for getting there.
We agree the visit
We confirm the arrival time and how you would like to pay while still on the phone, so there are no misunderstandings at the door. We also tell you which document we will ask for, so you can have it ready.
We confirm the home is yours
Before anything else, the technician checks the ID with your address or the tenancy agreement. Without that check the door is not opened, whatever the hour.
We look at the lock and quote
The technician looks at the door and the lock and tells you whether it can be opened without damage. You get the quote before we start, including a new lock if the old one has to be sacrificed. Nothing goes ahead without your approval.
We open the door and change the lock if needed
We use the least destructive method for that lock. If all goes as expected, you walk in with the lock intact. If it was damaged or already worn, we replace it there and then and test the new one before handing you the keys.
You keep the invoice and our number
The invoice lists the work and the parts separately. That document is your guarantee and what entitles you to complain if anything fails. If the lock gives trouble again, you call the same number.
