Water leak at home: what to do first

When water is running, the first minutes count most. Before you call, or while on the phone to us, do three things.

  • Close the main stopcock, called the torneira de segurança. It is usually next to the water meter or inside the flat, in the kitchen or the bathroom. If you cannot find it, we help you on the phone.
  • If water has reached sockets, light fittings or the fuse board, switch the power off at the board before touching anything. If you see sparks or smell burning, leave it and call 112.
  • Tell the neighbour below. The sooner they know, the less damage on both sides.

Burst pipe

A burst pipe makes itself known straight away: water coming out of a wall, the ceiling or from under a cupboard, sometimes with force. Close the water and call us. If you cannot shut it off, tell us on the phone, because that changes how urgent it is. We wrote a guide on what to do in the first minutes of a burst pipe.

A hidden leak in the wall or floor

A hidden leak gives itself away long before water shows: the bill climbs for no reason, you hear a hiss with every tap closed, the paint bubbles or a stain appears on the neighbour's ceiling. The sooner the water is shut off, the smaller the job stays.

Leak detection without breaking more than needed

Finding a leak inside a wall is not guesswork. We watch the meter with every tap closed, listen to the pipework and follow the damp back to its source. We only open up once the point is located, and only as much as needed.

You can run a first test yourself: close every tap, make sure no appliance is filling and check whether the meter keeps turning. If it does, water is escaping somewhere, and that is worth telling us when you call.

Dripping tap and tap replacement

A dripping tap looks like a small thing, but it drips day and night and shows up on the bill. Often it is a worn internal part, such as the washer or the cartridge, and it can be fixed without changing the tap. We explain both options in a guide on the dripping tap.

When the tap is old, worn or full of limescale, replacing it makes more sense than repairing it. We replace taps and mixers on basins, kitchen sinks, baths and showers. We tell you which option is worth it and you decide.

Bathroom and kitchen plumbing

Not everything is an emergency. Much of the plumbing we do is booked work: replacing a leaking trap or doing the plumbing for a full bathroom or kitchen refit. For those we visit first and quote before starting.

Appliance connections

A new washing machine or dishwasher, or one leaking at the connection. We connect it to the water supply and the waste and only leave once it runs with no leaks at the inlet or the outlet.

Water that will not drain

If the problem is not water escaping but water that will not go down, what you need is drain unblocking in Porto. It is a different service but the same phone call.

Emergency plumber: what is urgent and what can wait

We answer at any hour, but not everything has to be sorted at three in the morning. It is urgent when water is running and you cannot stop it, when water is reaching the electrics, when it is getting through to a neighbour, or when the home has no water at all.

A dripping tap or a slowly leaking trap can wait until morning, as long as you close the small valve that feeds that fixture. On the phone we tell you honestly which case you are in and book a time that suits you. If you rent, let your landlord know.

How the repair goes, from the first call to the invoice

It is always the same path, day or night.

  1. You call or send a message

A person answers. We ask for your full address, including floor and door, where the water is and whether you have managed to close the main stopcock. A photo of the leak or the stain helps. With that we tell you what is likely and how long we will take to get there.

  2. We agree the visit

We confirm the arrival time and how you would like to pay while still on the phone, so there are no misunderstandings at the door. If water is still running, we tell you what to do while you wait.

  3. We find the source

The technician checks the meter, the visible pipework and the damp areas until they find the exact point, explaining what they see in plain words. If the source is in the building's shared pipework or the flat above, we tell you before touching anything.

  4. You get the quote before we start

We tell you what needs doing, where we need to open up, what it costs and how long it takes. If a repair is not worth it and replacing makes more sense, we say so. Nothing goes ahead without your approval.

  5. We repair and test in front of you

We repair, turn the water back on and check that the joints stay dry and the taps work. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you how long it will take. If the home has to stay without water until the next day, we say so plainly before we leave.

  6. You keep the invoice and our number

The invoice lists the work and the parts used. That document is your guarantee and what entitles you to complain if anything fails. If the leak comes back, you call the same number.

Plumbing questions

Do you come out at night and at weekends?

Yes. A burst pipe does not wait for Monday. We answer 24 hours a day, every day of the year, public holidays included.

How do you find a leak inside a wall?

From the meter behaviour, the sound of pipework under pressure and the damp pattern. We open the minimum needed, and only once the point is located.

How much does a plumber cost?

It depends on the job, so we do not quote over the phone without seeing it. Two leaks described the same way can mean half an hour or half a day. The quote is free and given on site, before any work.

There is a stain on my ceiling. Is the leak mine?

Nearly always it comes from the flat above or the building's shared pipework. Talk to the neighbour and, if needed, to the building administration, the condomínio. We check where the water comes from before repairing, so the bill goes to the right person.

Do you do bathroom and kitchen refits?

Yes. It is booked work: we see the space first and give you the quote before starting.

A plumber near you across Greater Porto

We send a plumber to every municipality of Greater Porto. Porto's historic centre has many old buildings with pipework patched more than once, while in Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia and Gondomar we mostly find buildings from the eighties and nineties with the original plumbing.

Tell us what is happening

We take the call, work out the fault and tell you how long we need to get there. The quote costs nothing.
