Cylinder replacement or lock change: what you need

Moving into a new place, losing a set of keys or finding the door forced are three different situations with the same immediate answer: change the cylinder, called the canhão in Portuguese. It is the part the key goes into, and it decides who can open the door.

These are the situations we are called out for most often and what we do in each one.

Cylinder replacement

In most cases changing the cylinder is enough, and it is the quickest and cheapest answer. The lock stays in the door, only the part the key fits into changes, and the old keys stop working. If you are unsure, we wrote a guide on lost keys and when it is worth changing the whole lock.

Lock change

The whole lock is only changed when it is worn or damaged. The signs are familiar: the key turns stiffly, the latch does not catch, or you have to push the door to lock it. Sometimes the lock is fine and the door has dropped out of line. We check that before changing any part.

Faulty lock

The key turns but the door will not open, the bolt sticks, or the lock no longer locks. Do not force the key or reach for pliers: that is how keys snap inside and the job grows. Call us and describe what happens when you turn the key.

Key snapped in the lock

Do not try to pull the piece out with glue or tweezers, as it usually goes further in. We remove the broken part and, if the cylinder is damaged, replace it there and then. If the key snapped on the outside and you cannot get in, the job becomes door opening in Porto, and we will ask for a document showing that you live there.

Changing the lock after a break-in

If you come home to a forced door, do not go in if someone could still be inside. Move away and call 112, the European emergency number. If you plan to report it, photograph the door and the lock before anything is touched.

Then call us. We change the lock or cylinder at any hour, and if the door has been bent out of shape, we make it secure so it closes safely that night. If keys were taken, or you cannot be sure, the cylinder gets changed either way.

Keep the invoice. It lists the work and the parts used, and it is the document you can show your home insurer if you have one.

Security doors and security cylinders

An armoured door is only as secure as its cylinder. A security cylinder resists bumping, pulling and snapping, the three methods used to force a closed door. When the door is solid and the cylinder is old, that is the place to start.

We work on wooden, aluminium, PVC and armoured doors, as well as gates and garages. We carry cylinders and locks with us so the door is not left open waiting for an order. If your door needs a special part that has to be ordered, we tell you how long it will take rather than inventing a date.

When choosing the new cylinder we show you the options that fit your door, with a quote for each, and the decision is yours.

Locksmith or door opening: which one you need

This page is for when you can get in and want the lock changed, repaired or upgraded. If you are locked out with the keys inside, what you need is door opening, and our guide explains what to do first.

If you have just moved in, change the cylinder in the first few days. You do not know how many copies of the key exist or who holds them. If you rent, tell your landlord about the change and agree who keeps a copy.

What our locksmith service covers

  • Lock and cylinder replacement
  • Security and anti bumping cylinders
  • Keys snapped inside the lock
  • Armoured and high security doors

How the job goes, from the first call to the invoice

It is always the same path, day or night. When the security of your home is at stake, knowing what comes next helps.

  1. You call or send a message

A person answers. We ask for your full address, what happened and the type of door: wood, aluminium, PVC or armoured. A photo of the cylinder taken from the front helps us bring the right part. With that we tell you what is likely and how long we will take to get there.

  2. We agree the visit

We confirm the arrival time and how you would like to pay while still on the phone, so there are no misunderstandings at the door. After a break-in, we also tell you what to do while you wait.

  3. We look at the door and the lock

The technician checks the cylinder, the lock and the way the door closes, and explains in plain words what they found and what needs replacing.

  4. You get the quote before we start

We tell you whether a new cylinder is enough or the lock has to come out too, what the options are, what each one costs and how long it takes. Nothing goes ahead without your approval.

  5. We fit and test in front of you

We fit the new part and test every key, locking and unlocking from inside and outside, until the door closes without effort. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you how long it will take rather than inventing a date.

  6. You keep the new keys and the invoice

We hand over all the new keys. The invoice lists the work and the parts used separately. That document is your guarantee and what entitles you to complain if anything fails. If the lock gives trouble again, you call the same number.

Locksmith questions

I lost my keys. Is changing the cylinder enough?

In most cases yes, and it is the quickest and cheapest answer. The lock itself is only changed when it is worn or damaged.

What does a security cylinder actually add?

It resists bumping, pulling and snapping, the three methods used to force a closed door.

Will you change locks right after a break-in?

Yes, at any hour. If the door has been bent out of shape we make it secure so it closes safely that night.

Do you work on security doors?

Yes, as well as wooden, aluminium and PVC doors, gates and garages.

How much does it cost to change the locks on a house?

It depends on the door, the lock and the cylinder you choose, which is why we do not give prices over the phone without seeing it. The quote is free and given on site, before any work.

Are you an emergency locksmith, open at night?

Yes. We answer 24 hours a day, every day of the year. A forced door on a Sunday night is exactly the kind of call we take.

Locksmith across Greater Porto

We change locks in every municipality of Greater Porto. In Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira, as in Vila do Conde, the salt air near the sea ages cylinders and fittings faster than inland, and a key that starts to turn stiffly is often the first sign. From central Porto to Gaia or Valongo, we carry cylinders and locks in the van so the door is not left open waiting for an order.

Tell us what is happening

We take the call, work out the fault and tell you how long we need to get there. The quote costs nothing.
