What might be wrong with your water heater

In most Porto flats hot water comes from a small gas water heater on the kitchen wall, called an esquentador. If you have just moved here it may be a type of appliance you have never had to deal with. You do not need to know how it works to get it fixed. Tell us what it is doing and we take it from there.

These are the situations we are called out for most often and what usually sits behind each one.

The water heater will not light

You open the tap, hear the click of the igniter and no flame appears. The appliance may not be getting gas, the igniter batteries may be flat, or the part that makes the spark may have failed. On the phone we ask you to check whether the hob has gas, because that tells us straight away if the problem is the heater or the gas supply. It lights, then switches off after a few minutes

The heater starts, warms the water for a short while and shuts down. One of its safety systems is cutting the gas on purpose. The flue may not be clearing the fumes properly, a sensor may no longer read the flame, or the burner may be dirty. Switching it on and off again will not help. The appliance is protecting the home and the cause has to be found.

Lukewarm water or changing temperature

The water is hot with one tap open and goes cold when someone opens a second one, or it swings between hot and cold on its own. This usually comes down to limescale inside the appliance, the water pressure in the flat or a worn regulating part. We check the pressure on site and tell you whether the fix is in the heater or in the plumbing.

Water leaking from underneath

A puddle or a steady drip under the heater means a connection or an internal part has stopped sealing. Close the water inlet valve under the appliance and avoid using it until we arrive, so the water does not reach the electrical parts.

A smell of gas

If you smell gas, close the gas valve, open the windows and do not switch any lights or appliances on or off. If the smell is strong, leave the building and call 112, the European emergency number. The repair only starts once the home is aired and safe.

Water heater servicing

Many of the urgent calls we get on the first cold days of the year could have been avoided with a routine service. During a service we clean the burner, check the combustion and the flue, make sure the safety systems cut the gas when they should and look for leaks at the connections.

Once a year is the usual interval, ideally before winter. If the heater sits in a small room or is clearly old, it matters even more. You book it like any other job, by phone or WhatsApp, at a time that suits you.

Repair or replace: how we decide with you

Not every water heater is worth repairing. When we conclude it is not, we tell you plainly and explain why, even if that means a smaller job for us.

We look at three things. The age of the appliance and the general state of its insides. Whether the failed part is still sold for that model. And whether this is the first fault or the third in a short time. With that on the table we give you both options and a quote for each, and the decision is yours.

If you rent your flat, you may want to forward the quote to your landlord before we go ahead. We are happy to wait for that, and the quote is written so it can be shared.

How the repair goes, from the first call to the invoice

It is always the same path, day or night. Knowing what comes next takes a lot of the stress out of being left without hot water.

1. You call or send a message

   A person answers. We ask for your full address, what is happening and, if possible, a photo of the heater or of the code on its display. With that we tell you what is likely and how long we will take to get there.

2. We agree the visit

   We confirm the arrival time and how you would like to pay while still on the phone, so there are no misunderstandings at the door. If there is a gas smell or running water, we tell you what to do while you wait.

3. We diagnose at your home

   The technician checks the gas, the water, the ignition and the flue until the cause is found, explains what they see in plain words and shows you the part when it is the culprit.

4. You get the quote before we start
