What might be wrong with your boiler

The boiler heats the radiators and, in many homes, the water at the taps too. When it breaks down the flat gets cold and the shower may go cold too. Tell us what you see: a code on the display, the pressure gauge needle low, cold radiators or a boiler that shows no sign of life.

These are the situations we are called out for most often and what usually sits behind each one.

Boiler locked out or showing an error code

The boiler stops and shows a code or a flashing light. The code says where the problem is, but it does not solve it: low pressure, ignition failure, a temperature sensor or a seized pump all call for different work. You can try the reset once, as the manual describes. If it locks out again, do not keep trying: take a photo of the display and send it to us on WhatsApp.

Boiler losing pressure

The gauge needle drops and the boiler eventually locks out. If you have already topped it up and the pressure falls again after a few days, there is a leak somewhere, often at a radiator valve or in the expansion vessel. We find the leak instead of topping the system up over and over.

Cold radiators

If the radiators are warm at the bottom and cold at the top, there is air in the system. We bleed it and check the pressure afterwards, otherwise it comes straight back. If they are all cold while the boiler seems to be running, the problem may be the circulation pump or a valve.

Boiler not firing

You hear the boiler try to start, but no flame appears and it ends in a lockout. It may not be getting gas, or the fault may be in the ignition or in the part that senses the flame. On the phone we ask you to check whether the hob has gas, because that tells us straight away if the problem is the boiler or the gas supply.

A smell of gas

If you smell gas, close the gas valve, open the windows and do not touch light switches or electrical appliances. If the smell is strong, leave the building and call 112, the European emergency number. The repair only starts once the home is aired and safe.

Boiler service

Many of the emergency boiler repair calls we get on the first cold day of November could have been avoided with a yearly service. During a service we clean the burner, check the flue, adjust the combustion, check the system pressure and look for signs of leaks at the connections and valves.

Once a year is the usual interval, ideally before winter, while there is time to change a part without rushing. You book it by phone or WhatsApp, at a time that suits you. We also wrote a longer guide on the annual boiler service, with what gets checked at each visit. If you rent, it is worth asking your landlord when the boiler was last serviced.

Repair or replace: how we decide with you

Not every boiler is worth repairing, and when it is not we tell you plainly, even if that means a smaller job for us.

We look at three things. The age of the boiler and the state of its insides. Whether the failed part is still sold for that model. And whether this is the first fault or the third in the same winter. With that on the table we explain both options and what each one involves, and the decision is yours.

Boiler replacement

When a boiler is no longer worth repairing, we explain why on site and what replacing it involves: what kind of appliance makes sense for the home, what changes in the gas connection and the flue, and how long the home may be without heating. That way you decide with all the information, without pressure.

Boiler, water heater or cylinder: which one do you have

A boiler heats the radiators and often the tap water too. A gas water heater, the esquentador found on many Porto kitchen walls, only heats water as you open the tap. If there are no radiators connected and your hot water comes from a small gas unit, what you need is water heater repair in Porto. If it comes from an electric tank, the right service is hot water cylinder repair.

You do not have to name it correctly. Broken boiler, heating repair, no hot water: describe what is happening, or send a photo on WhatsApp, and we take it from there.

What our boiler repair covers

  • Locked out boilers and error codes
  • Low pressure in the system
  • Cold radiators and system bleeding
  • Ignition and flame failures
  • Circulation pump and expansion vessel
  • Annual servicing and cleaning
  • Parts replacement, all brands

How the repair goes, from the first call to the invoice

It is always the same path, day or night. In a cold flat, knowing what comes next makes the wait easier.

  1. You call or send a message

A person answers. We ask for your full address, what is happening and, if possible, a photo of the boiler, the code on its display and the pressure gauge. With that we tell you what is likely and how long we will take to get there.

  2. We agree the visit

We confirm the arrival time and how you would like to pay while still on the phone, so there are no misunderstandings at the door. If there is a gas smell or water coming from the boiler, we tell you what to do while you wait.

  3. We diagnose at your home

The technician reads the error code and confirms it on the system, checking the gas, the ignition, the pressure, the pump and the flue until the cause is found. They explain what they see in plain words and show you the part when it is the culprit.

  4. You get the quote before we start

We tell you what needs doing, what it costs and how long it takes. If the repair is not worth it, we say so. Nothing goes ahead without your approval.

  5. We repair and test in front of you

We replace the part, restore the pressure and bleed the system if needed. Then we run the heating and the hot water and confirm the boiler works without locking out. If the part has to be ordered, we tell you how long it will take rather than inventing a date.

  6. You keep the invoice and our number

The invoice lists the work and the parts used. That document is your guarantee and what entitles you to complain if anything fails. If the boiler gives trouble again, you call the same number.

Boiler questions

The boiler loses pressure every few days. What does that mean?

There is a leak somewhere on the system, often at a radiator valve or in the expansion vessel. We find the point instead of topping it up over and over.

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Once a year, ideally before winter. That is when the burner is cleaned, the flue checked and the combustion adjusted.

Radiators are warm at the bottom and cold at the top. Why?

Air in the system. We bleed it and check the pressure afterwards, otherwise it comes straight back.

How much does a boiler repair cost?

It depends on the fault, which is why we do not give prices over the phone without seeing the boiler. The quote is free and given on site, before any work.

Do you do emergency boiler repair at night?

Yes. We answer 24 hours a day, every day of the year. No heating on a winter night is exactly the kind of call we take.

Do you repair every brand of boiler?

Yes. We replace parts on boilers of every brand found in Portuguese homes. When a part for an old model no longer exists, we tell you and offer alternatives.

Boiler repair across Greater Porto

We repair boilers in every municipality of Greater Porto. In flats in Porto, Gaia and Matosinhos we find many wall mounted boilers in the kitchen or on an enclosed balcony, while in the houses of Maia, Gondomar or Valongo the boiler often sits in a garage or a utility room. Tell us on the phone where yours is, so we arrive prepared.

Tell us what is happening

We take the call, work out the fault and tell you how long we need to get there. The quote costs nothing.
